Different source material and / or application is likely to produce somewhat different results.Īssuming the target is a portable device with average in-ear headphones, my approach to the job would be something like this: These values are valid for this specific piece of audio using this specific version of Ocenaudio. These results give an indication of what can be expected, but these aren't set to stone. These have a significant drop in the audio quality, but only with the smallest file bad enough to really bother me. All of these files have - to my ear - perfectly fine quality when the point is just to keep the speech clear and understandable.įor the two smallest files I first converted the original 44.1K mono file to 8K, then exported it as 8 kbps MP3, FBR and VBR. Ocenaudio's 32bit export is slightly smaller, and dropping the bitrate to 16bit halves the size.Īll the MP3 files are exported from the 16bit mono file. It can also export with other encodings but I didn't test due crash. The original audio is a 44.1KHz 16bit stereo WAV file.īoth Audacity and Ocenaudio work internally with 32bit floating point data, and Audacity's default export is with that encoding hence the large file size. The resulting file sizes: 001-orig_stereo.wav 4355464 Variable Bitrate with qualities Highest, Medium and Lowest (7 in total available).I then exported the mono file from Ocenaudio with different settings: I opened the file in both Audacity and Ocenaudio, split it to mono files and saved one of the mono files to new wavs. I actually tried to work this out with Audacity, but it crashed on me, so I reverted back to Ocenaudio, which has been my weapon of choice for this kind of work for almost 2 decades. I did a bit of testing on this, using this snippet by maestro Brian Eno from SampleSwap. This should only be selected for streaming over the Internet since it helps to prevent stutters and skips. There are many roads to Rome, none of which can be considered "right" or "best". It keeps the bit rate the same, no matter if no audio is playing or if 70 voices are talking in unison. Constant bit rate mode offers the worst audio encoding. The program still provides a slightly larger bit rate for more complex sections of audio while maintaining an overall average of the bit rate you selected. Average bit rate mode provides an average bit rate based on your selection.Variable bit rate mode automatically attempts to provide the lowest bit rate possible while losing only non-essential audio data.Choose a low bit rate to lower the bit rate of the audio. Preset bit rate mode provides four bit rates that are selected for you.Just select the file type you want from the "Format" menu and select "Options" to change the bit rate. If you want to change the bit rate using another compressed file type, such as OGG or an M4A file, the steps are similar. You can also select "Download" directly from the "Libraries" menu to download the needed codecs. Locate the file using the file browser and then select it. Save that file on your main hard drive and then click on the "Libraries" option in the Audacity "Preference" menu. To do this, download the codec from the link provided in the error code. If you get an error code, you may need to visit the Audacity website to download a codec for certain types of audio. In 2009, a low-budget viral video was produced by the BBC which revealed The Black Stig survived this ordeal, surfacing on an English beach after six years at sea and stealing a man's frisbee. This first Stig would be killed off at the beginning of Series 3 after driving the team's modified Jaguar XJ-S off the deck of the HMS Invincible. The show's first Stig wore an all-black outfit and was portrayed by Perry McCarthy, who would have two jobs to drive fast cars around the Top Gear test track and to teach the guests stars how to drive the Suzuki Liana for their laps in the Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car segments. Jeremy Clarkson introducing The Stig in Series 1, Episode 1. Um, its job is simply to go out there and drive fast." " Now we call this thing The Stig, okay, we don't know its name, we really don't know its name, no-one knows its name and we don't want to know because it's a racing driver and racing drivers have tiny little brains and therefore worthless opinions and they're very dull doctors actually call it Mansell Syndrome. There have been three official Stigs on the show, while various other "Stigs" have made cameo appearances. A proposed name for the Stig was originally "The Gimp", and would wear a racing outfit patterned after a leather bondage suit until protests from Perry McCarthy nixed the idea. The Stig's name derived from presenter Jeremy Clarkson's days at Repton School where, according to Clarkson, new students were always called "Stig". The second was a more familiar White Stig, and was portrayed by racing driver Ben Collins from 2003 until 2010, leaving the show after rising tensions between himself and the production crew of the show eventually resulted in the publishing of his autobiography, The Man in the White Suit, which revealed his identity to the world. There were two versions of The Stig prior to this incarnation the first, known as The Black Stig, was killed off in Series 3, Episode 1 after ex-Formula 1 driver Perry McCarthy was revealed to have violated non-disclosure agreements upon the publishing of his book, Flat Out, Flat Broke: Formula 1 the Hard Way!, which revealed his identity. Currently, The Stig is in its third iteration, "born" in a similar location and means to Jesus Christ at the end of the Middle East Special where thereafter it quickly grew into an adult version of itself. The Stig is an anonymous race car driver created by Jeremy Clarkson and Andy Wilman, who has featured in the British television series Top Gear since its relaunch in 2002. If you'd like to get a hold of my Grammarly PopClip Extension, check out my repository on GitHub. PopClip then pastes the highlighted text into the text area, and Grammarly does its thing. Conclusion Pantherbar is a useful addition to your Windows toolkit. The majority of the time I’m going to put the corrected text where I had selected, so this saves a few steps. Pantherbar immediately pastes the new text in. I ended up creating a PopClip extension that takes the highlighted text, opens Chrome and creates a new tab, and then goes to a web page I create that just has a text area on it. PopClip copies the modified text to the clipboard. I couldn't have PopClip open the Grammarly app, create a new document, and then paste the text I had highlighted into the app for checking, but I did find another solution. The app doesn't take you to a blank document when you first open it, and there is no keyboard shortcut to create a new document. The problem I ran into is that Grammarly's desktop app is simple. I wanted to create a way for PopClip to take highlighted text and use Grammarly to check it. If you pay for Grammarly's service, you can also get plagiarism checking and a few other helpful features. It has an excellent web browser extension that will check text as you type it on websites. The best part of it is that you can create extensions for it to do whatever you want. You can tell it to copy, paste, search the web, and a whole slew of other things. You highlight some text, and PopClip brings up a small menu with some different options to choose from. PopClip reminds me of what happens when you hold your finger down on text on your iPhone, but completely customizable and for your Mac. I came across PopClip through a friend who found it on Brett Terpstra's website. PopClip and Grammarly, what do they have in common? Not much, but they can be quite valuable when put together. |
